The Difference Between Commercial Granite and Geological Granite

In the natural stone industry, the word "granite" can sometimes lead to confusion, as it holds two very distinct meanings depending on who is using it. Let's look at the difference between what professionals call "Commercial Granite" and true "Geological Granite"

The term "granite" comes from geology. It refers to a volcanic rock (or "plutonic magmatic" rock) that has a very precise chemical and mineralogical composition.

The word "granit", on the other hand, comes from the Italian "granito", meaning "grainy" (or granular). It is a commercial term that encompasses all hard, granular, and non-porous rocks, regardless of their mineralogical nature. Therefore, geological granites, limestones, sandstones, gneisses, breccias, and conglomerates are all grouped under the generic name of "granit" (commercial granite). Despite their geological differences, all these commercial granites are recognizable by the presence of crystal grains.
